Lenovo Thinkpad T60p Fan Error

If you own a thinkpad and it ever fails to boot and simply shows a frightening black screen that says “Fan Error” on the upper left, never fear, rmk has a fix for you.

  1. Power Down Laptop (I think this happens automatically)
  2. Lift laptop up with right hand, keeping screen open
  3. Find Fan (Back Left Corner, you can see the copper fins inside the vents
  4. Strike laptop case near vents several times with heel of left hand
  5. Power Laptop back up, it should work

This has worked for me 3 times in a row. If it ever fails I plan on using compressed air aimed into those vents.

Wow! Thanks! I just bought an old thinkpad on Ebay for $200 and I was afraid it was DOA. I gave it a whack and now it is working.

Great! For me, this exact strategy didn’t work, but a similar one did. While it’s starting up (i.e., after I’ve pressed the power button to power it up) but before the error message comes up, I tap the laptop case underneath the fan repeatedly. This seems to get the fan moving. I had to do it continuously until Windows started up. I also blew some of the dust out of the vent. Thanks for the help!
